I’ve been working in the division of structural biology (STRUBI) in the University of Oxford since January 2016. I’m working on structure analysis of HIV-2 envelope glycoprotein (Env) using electron microscope under the instruction of Dr. Juha T Huiskonen. The-state-of-the-art electron microscope is paving the way to visualize biological molecular structures in sub-angstrom resolution without crystallization. Since HIV-2 Env proteins are rich in flexible hydroxylcarbon chains, crystal structure analysis seems to be difficult. Therefore, I’m learning how to prepare specimen, how to use electron microscope and how to solve the structure through the structure analysis of HIV-2 Env protein. In addition to electron microscope, there are so many facilities required for protein preparation at STRUBI. Furthermore talented young researchers are working in STRUBI and they are all kind to help me when I’m in trouble with experiments. I feel STRUBI is an excellent environment to engage in structural biology studies.
At the weekend, I join walking group in Oxford and enjoy walks in countryside around Oxford. Beautiful landscapes make me relax and conversations with local people give me chances to learn cultures and histories of United Kingdom.
